Town of Edenton Water Treatment Plant Upgrades

BACK TO PROJECTS

Project Description

Stroud Engineering provided all engineering services related to complete replacement of The Town of Edenton’s Freemason Water Treatment Plant and Beaver Hill Water Treatment Plant. These services included pilot testing for new water treatment process, engineering alternatives analysis, preparation of grant and loan applications, permitting and preparation of final construction plans and contracting documents.

The Edenton water system had elevated Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) above the maximum contaminant level (MCL). The treatment process at both plants consisted of cation exchange softeners and gas chlorine disinfection. This treatment process is not capable of removing the precursors that form TTHMs. All existing water treatment equipment was severely corroded and in need of replacement. The primary purpose of the project was to upgrade the treatment to include an ion exchange process utilizing a resin specifically designed to remove TTHM precursors which testing has indicated to be bromides. The effectiveness of the ion exchange process was verified by a pilot study. Each plant was designed to produce 0.542 mgd treated water.

The project was funded by a USDA-RD Grant/Loan. Construction is planned to begin in the Fall of 2018.
